The semiconductor industry depends on bold ideas and the next generation of innovators. The Chip the Future Challenge™ brings together undergraduate and graduate students from around the world to develop original research, breakthrough technologies, and practical solutions that address real opportunities across the semiconductor ecosystem. Participants have the opportunity to showcase their work to industry leaders, apply classroom learning to real-world challenges, receive valuable feedback from semiconductor experts, expand their professional networks, and compete for cash awards and industry recognition.

Two Tracks. One Opportunity.

Compete individually or in teams of up to five members by selecting one of two challenge tracks.

Research Challenge
Present original research that advances semiconductor science, engineering, manufacturing, or real-world applications.

Innovation Challenge
Develop an original semiconductor solution that addresses an industry challenge or creates measurable value through innovation.

Top projects will be recognized by semiconductor industry leaders and compete for cash awards:

Process

How the Competition Works

The competition unfolds in three stages, guiding participants from concept development to a final presentation before a panel of industry judges.

Stage 1: Submit Your Idea

Teams submit a project abstract outlining:

  • Problem statement
  • Proposed solution
  • Technical approach
  • Expected outcomes
  • Industry impact

Projects are evaluated based on innovation, feasibility, and potential impact.

Stage 2: Develop Your Solution

Selected teams move into the development phase, where projects evolve into working prototypes, simulations, or validated research.

Industry mentorship opportunities may be available throughout development.

Stage 3: Present to Industry Leaders

Finalists submit:

  • A recorded presentation
  • Final technical report
  • Presentation slides
  • Prototype or simulation demonstration

Projects are evaluated by leaders from across the semiconductor industry.

Competition Rules

To ensure fairness and integrity:

  • All submissions must be completed in English.
  • Technical reports must be submitted as PDFs.
  • Supporting code and design files must be documented.
  • Participants retain ownership of their intellectual property.
  • The SEMI Foundation may showcase projects for educational and promotional purposes.
  • All participants must follow principles of academic integrity and ethical conduct.
